Preserving Natural Fibers: Cashmere, Silk & Linen
A practical guide to caring for delicate textiles, maintaining hand-feel, and extending garment longevity across seasons.
Fast fashion is designed to be replaced; fine clothing is designed to be maintained. When you curate a personal wardrobe of quality natural textiles, proper preservation techniques become just as significant as styling decisions.
Cashmere & Fine Woolens
Contrary to common perception, frequent dry cleaning can strip wool fibers of their natural lanolin oils, causing brittleness over time. Instead:
- Allow garments to rest for 24–48 hours between wears to let fibers rebound.
- Hand-wash in lukewarm water with pH-neutral delicate wash only when necessary.
- Always fold heavy knitwear rather than hanging, which stretches shoulder seams.
Mulberry Silk Care
Silk is remarkably strong as a tensile fiber, but susceptible to heat and friction. Steaming is consistently preferable to direct ironing, and garments should never be dried in direct sunlight to avoid fiber discoloration.
